april’s notes on civilized behavior in china:
if you are an 18-year old male carrying nothing and in perfectly good health, you do not get to steal an open seat on the bus from my 40+ year old mom. you just don’t. and if you do, you’re not a real man.
if you are a sixty-year old lady, i will respect you because you are my elder. but if my mom asks you a question, you do not have the right to launch into a 5-minute rant on how she shouldn’t ask you for directions. once you start yelling, i reserve the right to be less than respectful to you.
if you are in a temple, burn incense. don’t light cigarettes. it’s disrespectful. not to mention, smoking like that will just give you cancer.
if you are in a temple and it is crowded, i don’t mind if you accidentally push me. i mind if you decide now’s a great time to grope my ass.
if you verge on the slightly short side, when you open your umbrellas to protect yourself from rain or sun, please check to make sure that the pointy metal ends of your umbrella are not stabbing taller people in the eyes or mouth or throat.
._______. let’s act civilized, guys.
